FIERI

FIERI is an independent research institute on migration, mobility and integration. Since its foundation in 2001, it is strongly committed to a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to the study of the social and political transformations associated with growing population mobility and cultural diversity.

Irene Ponzo is currently the Deputy Director of FIERI. She graduated in Political Science in 2002 and completed her PhD in Comparative Sociological Research at the University of Turin (Italy) in 2006. She has worked extensively on integration policies at local level, including rural areas, and, more recently, on asylum seekers’ reception and inclusion within Horizon2020 projects (i.e., CEASEVAL and TRAFIG). She has participated in several projects aimed at fostering mutual learning among local stakeholders engaged in migrant integration (e.g. EU Migrant Integration Academy, MIGLIORA, PlurAlps). Leila Giannetto is Researcher at FIERI – International and European Forum on Migration Research in Torino (Italy). She obtained her PhD in Political Science from the University of Trento in 2018. She has worked, both with FIERI and with other entities (i.e., IOM, Euricse), on research projects on the integration of refugees and asylum seekers at the local level, particularly in remote areas. Her research interests include EU and national policies on the reception and integration of refugees and asylum seekers, and third sector organisations’ role in the inclusion of newcomers at the local level. Ferruccio Pastore (PhD, European University Institute, 1996) is the Director of FIERI since May 2009. He has previously been Deputy Director of the international relations and European studies think-tank CeSPI (Centre for International Policy Studies, Rome) and a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Firenze. Besides research, he has worked as an adviser on migration policy issues for Italian institutions and international organisations.
